School is officially letting out, and the City of Dallas is teaming up to make sure our youth stay active, engaged, and safe over the summer months.
Today, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson hosted a joint press conference to unveil a massive, multi-agency initiative designed to provide families with affordable—and mostly free—activities. This campaign is a powerhouse collaboration aimed at giving kids positive environments while directly helping to reduce summertime violent crime.
Here is what city leaders had to say about the programs rolling out this year:
🌟 What Each Department is Bringing to Dallas Families:
- Mayor Eric Johnson: Emphasized that investing in our youth sets them up for long-term success. He highlighted the Teen All-Access Pass, which grants teenagers free admission to local museums, nature centers, water parks, and the Dallas Zoo. He also highlighted the Youth Sports Ticket Program, a partnership providing free tickets to professional, collegiate, and amateur sporting events across the metroplex.
- Police Chief Daniel Comeaux: Applauded the initiative's focus on proactive prevention. He noted that public safety works best when it is shared, and that keeping kids positively engaged helps the police department keep the entire city safer during its most active season.
- City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert: Spoke powerfully about how "hope can be invented every single day." As a working mother who raised children in the city without nearby family, she validated the intense stress summer puts on family budgets and peace of mind, praising this ecosystem for easing that burden.
- Dallas ISD Deputy Superintendent Dr. Pamela Lear: Shared details on "Summer Breeze"—DISD's array of June and July camps covering everything from cheer, mariachi, and robotics to academic workshops. The best part? They are completely free, full-day, staffed by certified teachers, and include free bus transportation to and from the camps.
- Parks & Rec Director John Jenkins: Highlighted dynamic outdoor options, including specialized outdoor adventure camps at Samuell Farm, where youth can learn survival skills, kayaking, fishing, mountain biking, and nature photography.
- Library Director Manya Shorr: Promoted the SMART Summer reading program (Science, Math, Art, Reading, and Technology). Every single library location in Dallas will feature hands-on weekly programs to prevent the "summer slide" and keep kids learning through fun. As Director Shorr told Dallas families: "We got you this summer."
