DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson has tested positive for COVID-19. He won't preside over Wednesday's City Council meeting and has cancelled other events on his schedule for this week.

The Mayor says he began experiencing symptoms on Monday. He tested positive for the virus, although his wife did not. Both Mayor Johnson and his wife are fully vaccinated. He's describing his infection as a breakthrough case and says his symptoms are mild.

"Our primary concern at this time is the health of our children, who are not yet eligible to receive a vaccine," Mayor Johnson said. "I appreciate your thoughts and prayers on behalf of my family, and I look forward to a speedy recovery so I can get back to work with my colleagues on behalf of the people of Dallas."

He's not the first elected official to come down with the virus. Current Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker announced on Sunday, October 10th that she had tested positive. She was also fully vaccinated and described her symptoms as mild. Previous Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price tested positive in November of 2020, before COVID-19 vaccines were administered in the U.S. in December of 2020.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott tested positive for COVID-19 in August. He also had been fully vaccinated. The Governor also received the monoclonal antibody treatment after his positive COVID test.
