Workers have completed Phase One of the new Dallas deck park over I-35E near the Dallas Zoo.
While the park portion of what will be known as Southern Gateway Park has not even begun, the deck itself spanning I-35 near Ewing Avenue is now in place.
With this milestone completed, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson took a look Thursday and said "this park will accomplish so much for our city. It will stitch neighborhoods back together, boost economic development, improve quality of life, and provide a gateway into Dallas over I-35. Can't wait to see it finished!"
One major motivation spurring the plan onward was to reconnect an Oak Cliff neighbourhood that was split when I-35E was begun more than 60 years ago.
When the park is completed, planners intend it to have amenities and programs similar to those at Kyle Warren, the deck park over Wood Rodgers in downtown Dallas.
