DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- The faith-based nonprofit, OurCalling, is serving Thanksgiving dinner to 500 homeless people at its campus in Dallas Wednesday. The organization says Norma's Cafe is providing "decadent meals complete with turkey and all the fixings plus the requisite pumpkin and pecan pies."
"God blessed me to find OurCalling," one woman said who said she had been coming for several weeks. "It is so amazing how Dallas embraces the homeless. OurCalling is just fabulous. When you're hungry, you need to be here. There's a women's center, and the ladies upstairs are wonderful. The way they treat you is fantastic."
OurCalling is a daytime outreach center that provides meals, shower and restroom facilities, counseling, classrooms and space for job training.
In addition to meals provided by Norma's Cafe, OurCalling was showing Christmas movies Wednesday.
"Thanksgiving is a special time for families around the country, so we wanted to give that same kind of family feel to our homeless guests today," says OurCalling Director of Programs Ed Johnson III.
Johnson says OurCalling hopes to provide individuals and families comfort along with tools to help them escape homelessness.
"We do this every day. We're trying to connect with our friends with intentionality," he says. "We're trying to talk with them and have conversations with them about what it looks like to take a step forward. We are a Christian ministry as well, so we want to introduce people to Jesus and help them get off the streets."
The woman at OurCalling Wednesday said she had started coming a few weeks ago, but she moved to North Texas after her home in Louisiana was destroyed by a hurricane in 2020.
"It just made me feel at home when I saw the name, 'OurCalling.' That meant something," she says. "I would just like to say, 'Thank you very much for all that you do. We appreciate you so much, and God bless you."
