Someone is targeting Dallas water customers in a phone scam.

The crooks are calling people and pretending to be with Dallas Water Utilities. They're claiming the victim's bill is overdue and threatening to shut off service unless it's paid right way. The victims are told to make a payment over the phone or through a text message payment link. The scammers are using spoofing technology to trick the victim's caller i-d service into making it appear they are calling from the actual Dallas Water Utilities phone number, which is  214-651-1441.

Dallas Water Utilities does not contact customers by phone about delinquent accounts. Notices about a possible disconnection are sent through the mail.

The Dallas Police Department Financial Investigations Unit is investigating the case. They're asking anyone who has been a victim to email their complaint to forgery-dpd@dallascityhall.com or to call 214-671-3543.

Customers with questions regarding their account may call DWU Customer Service at 214-651-1441 Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m.
