Dallas Police Chief: Crime is going down in Dallas

In May, Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia's plan went into effect, and overall violent crime in Dallas is now down about 6% so far this year compared with last.

Dallas Police also report an increase in arrests and seizures of guns and drugs.

The Dallas City Council Public Safety Committee also heard Tuesday about the new domestic violence plan.

Garcia said there has already been some impact on domestic violence in the areas targeted for violent crime reduction.

The domestic violence plan adds more detectives to the department's domestic violence unit and adds home visits to offenders to intervene before repeat violence between intimate partners.

The department will also begin implementing an early warning system next month, to help identify problem police officers before they resort to excessive force.

Chief Garcia said "This is not necessarily going toward a disciplinary action. This is to save our officers, save their careers, and save the integrity and professionalism of DPD."
