The City of Dallas has received 36 applications to be the city's next Chief of Police. Selected applicants will begin the interview process next week.
Current Police Chief U. Renee Hall turned in her resignation in September. She had planned to step down in November but was persuaded by City Manager T.C. Broadnax to stay on through the end of December.
The city has hired an outside consultant to help recruit and screen applicants. The city also conducted a public survey of residents about their priorities for the next Chief, which generated 4,500 responses. Residents said they wanted a Chief with a track record of reducing crime and building trust with the community.
Applicants who advance to the interview stage of the process will speak with representatives of various neighborhood, business, non-profit and DPD employee groups. The final round of interviews will be conducted by the City Manager, who intends to make his selection by the end of December.
