Following a vigil Thursday night, Dallas police say several people vandalized the department's headquarters and the Dallas Police Association office in the Cedars neighborhood. They say about 30 people had gathered for the vigil, and the vandalism followed the event.
One group had claimed responsibility for the vandalism, posting pictures on Facebook with the caption, "Defund is our demand! There is blood on your hands!" Organizers say the hands represented 265 people "murdered" by Dallas police.
Crews spent the night power-washing the walls and windows to clear the graffiti. They also washed the sidewalks where messages were spray painted.
One message read, "Kill a cop / Save a life."
"We have damaged property. What's next, a damaged officer?" says the Dallas Police Association's Frederick Frazier. "How do our children feel who see that? We're a family, here."
Dallas police have not made any arrests but said they were questioning two people. Frazier says surveillance cameras outside Dallas police headquarters were not working.
"I would love to know what's going on over there right now," he says. "I would love to know their plan of action. I'd like to give that message to our officers."
Frazier said many people in the group Thursday night were the same organizers of the protest in Downtown Dallas that ended when four Dallas police and one Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer were shot and killed.
"To our common citizen, the people who go to work every single day, they think of us as the few who hold that line," he says. "But for this group, we are the scum of the earth. That's their narrative."
In 2015, a man who said police were responsible for him losing custody of his child fired several shots at Dallas police headquarters. No one was hurt, and he was ultimately shot and killed by police after a chase. Outside headquarters, police found a package of pipe bombs. The bombs exploded when a bomb-squad robot tried to move it.
