A Dallas police officer is recovering in the hospital after being shot in Pleasant Grove early Friday morning.
Dallas Police say officers were investigating an earlier family violence incident on Cypress Avenue near Briggs, just west of J.P. Hawn Park.
Reports say around 12:30 a.m. there was a gunfight between an officer and a gunman. Both of them were wounded, as was a Dallas police dog.
Dallas Police Association President Mike Mata says both the officer and the K-9's wounds are not life-threatening. He was shot multiple times in the leg and shoulder. The condition of the gunman has not been released.
Officials say the wounded officer has been working with the Dallas Police Department for about 20 years and has served in many capacities including with the department's mounted unit.
Mata says, with that length of service, the officer is known to a large percentage of Dallas police officers.
