One man is dead after exchanging fire with Dallas police officers early Wednesday morning, police say.

The incident began at about 5:35 a.m. Wednesday in the 10300 block of Shiloh Road, in the city's Casa View neighborhood, police said.

Police said officers responded to an "armed encounter" and when officers arrived, they ordered the man to drop his weapon. He did not drop the weapon and started to fire at the officers, police said.

Police said officers returned fire and struck the suspect. They attempted to render aid, but he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured in the shooting, police said.

In a Thursday afternoon press conference, Dallas Chief of Police Eddie Garcia said that they are still investigating why the victim didn't lower their weapon when officers asked multiple times. Garcia also said the victim had no felony convictions and they are still investigating if he had a history of mental health issues.

This investigation is still ongoing.
