Dallas police release body cam video of struggle with armed man who was shot by police
Dallas police chief Eddie Garcia has released an officer's bodycam video of this week's confrontation with an armed man who ended up getting shot by police.
Monday evening, police were called to an East Dallas apartment parking lot where managers reported that a man named Hernan Gutierrez was trying to steal a car.
Gutierrez was confronted by officers but resisted and the video shows a long, drawn out struggle with Gutierrez giving four police officers all they could handle in trying to get the handcuffs on him.
One officer tried a Taser but the video shows that had no effect to subdue Gutierrez. During the struggle, he pulled a pistol and fired one round but missed hitting any of the officers.
One of the officer pulled a pistol and shot Gutierrez who remains in the hospital today.
Gutierrez continued to struggle even after being shot and was laying face down on his pistol. At one point he got an arm free and reached under his body where the pistol was. But officers got his arm under control and he was unable to grab the handgun again.
The round fired by Gutierrez was located by detectives where it hit an occupied apartment north of the location where the struggle was going on.
Gutierrez will be charged with Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant. He is also currently wanted on a federal probation violation for a firearm-related offense.
Gutierrez was out on bail for that offense last year but cut off his ankle monitor. Garcia says a large quantity of cash and drugs were found in Gutierrez's backpack including meth, cocaine and heroin.
