Dallas Police gave more information Wednesday about an officer-involved shooting this week that resulted in an officer being shot in his bulletproof vest.
Officers were called to an apartment along Ledbetter near South Hampton Road when a suspect had pulled his grandmother into a bathroom.
Officers forced their way inside when they heard screaming and were told the suspect was armed.
Dallas Deputy Chief William Griffin says the suspect's handgun had been modified.
"A Glock switch makes the handgun automatic," he said. "It makes the handgun basically a machine gun, an automatic weapon, and they are illegal to be in procession of."
When police returned gunfire, both the suspect and his grandmother were shot.
"Officers immediately rendered first aid to both Robinson and grandmother until Dallas Fire Rescue arrived on the scene," Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said.
The grandmother was treated at the scene but the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Tony Robinson, was hospitalized.
He will eventually be charged with Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant.
The officer was not hurt.
Dallas Police said they have a history with the suspect having been called to the location before.
