As Dallas voters prepare to head to the polls, Proposition R, which would decriminalize the possession of up to four ounces of marijuana, has become one of the most hotly debated issues on the ballot.

Supporters, like Dr. Lara Sarah, have voiced strong backing for the measure. Speaking at a KRLD roundtable discussion, Sarah, a physician, highlighted the medicinal benefits of marijuana for many of her patients, including veterans. One such patient, a former soldier, travels to Colorado to obtain marijuana to manage his PTSD, Sarah said.

"He uses 2.5 grams a day and he can only buy four ounces," Sarah said. "Because if he buys more than four ounces, it is a felony if he is caught in possession of more than four ounces."

However, opponents, including former Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia, have raised concerns about the potential consequences of decriminalization. Garcia argued that possession of four ounces of marijuana is often linked to more serious criminal activity.

"In 2023, we had 28 murders that our homicide detectives knew had a drug nexus. Of those, 17 involved some amount of marijuana," he said.

The proposition has sparked intense debate as Election Day approaches, with both sides urging voters to carefully consider the implications of the measure.
