A Dallas woman admits to stealing thousands of dollars from a government program designed to help people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Paycheck Protection Program was supposed to help businesses keep employees on the payroll during the economic disruption of the pandemic.

But federal prosecutors say 40-year-old Monica Moreno of the Dallas area lied on her application paperwork and specifically omitted information about her criminal history when she applied for PPP loans and other federal aid programs.

Court reports show she got more than $40,000 in taxpayer funds.

Moreno has now pled guilty to theft of government property and could face up to 10 years in federal prison.
