Galveston (1080 KRLD) - Galveston is planning a day-long celebration of Juneteenth on Saturday.
The Texas town holds a special place in the history of the holiday. It's where a General from the Union Army arrived in 1865 with news of the Emancipation Proclamation. Galveston events coordinator Doug Matthews says the entire community will celebrate on Saturday.
"It should be a celebration of all races and not just [the] African American race," said Matthews. "It's part of our history."
Galveston is holding a parade and fireworks display and a re-enactment of the first Juneteenth celebration in 1866.
