The Deep Ellum Foundation will host two open community listening sessions this week after three separate shootings early Sunday left four people dead and at least 15 others injured in the Dallas neighborhood.
The sessions are set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, and 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the Deep Ellum Community Center, 2528 Elm St., Suite A. Both gatherings are open to residents, workers, business owners and anyone who cares about the district. Amplified Minds, a mental health nonprofit, will attend both sessions to provide support and resources, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Dallas police said the shootings unfolded over roughly 75 minutes in the early hours of Nov. 1. The first was reported about 12:20 a.m. in the 2600 block of Elm Street, the second about 1:05 a.m. in the 2600 block of Main Street, and the third about 1:35 a.m. in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street. Investigators have been working to determine whether the incidents were connected. Additional officers had been assigned to Deep Ellum for the Halloween crowds, police said.
The violence has renewed concerns among people who live and work in the entertainment district. Some workers have described the neighborhood as vibrant during the day but have raised questions about nighttime safety. Federal and local authorities have since announced increased coordination and a public safety operation focused on the area.
The Deep Ellum Foundation manages the Public Improvement District that supports maintenance, safety and promotion of the neighborhood. The listening sessions are intended to give the community a place to share concerns and hear updates in the days after the shootings.
