Defense lawyers in the trial of Raynaldo Ortiz argue against accusations that Ortiz poisoned IV bags

Defense lawyers in the trial of Raynaldo Ortiz are trying to knock down accusations that poisoned IV bags were behind medical problems in patients.

Defense expert witness Doctor Bobbi Schweizer, who has written a book on anesthesiology, reviewed the records of five of the patients whom the Government says were poisoned by Ortiz. She concluded there were other factors that could have led to cardiac incidents in each case. She told the jury she could neither find a pattern of problems, nor could she say the medical incidents were the result of tainted IV bags.

The testimony is to rebut the Government's claim that Ortiz injected a nerve blocker into IV bags that were used buy other doctors during routine day surgeries at the Baylor, Scott and White Surgicenter in North Dallas.  Federal prosecutors say Ortiz was upset that the facility was disciplining him and that he injected lethal levels of poison in to a dozen IV bags.

The case is expected to go to the jury by the end of the week
