One south Texas health expert says the Delta COVID-19 variant is about to be displaced by the Omicron variant, and it's happening much faster than expected.
The COVID-19 variant Omicron is much more contagious than Delta, which is much more contagious that prior variants according to Dr. Wesley Long, medical director of microbiology at Houston Methodist Hospital.
Dr. Long say that based on it's path, "it's going to get up to that 80-90% range fairly quickly. Really with Delta it took us about 3 months, and likely by the last week of December to first week on January that Omicron will be over 90%."
He says the reason it's more transmissible is partly because it's highly mutated. He says there are scenarios where the Delta variant could hang around in some percentage.
Dr. Long reminds people that it's important to get a booster shot to consider yourself fully vaccinated. That will help protect you from some of the severe effects of the disease.
