An apartment burglar recently arrested in Denton can easily be described as slippery, but he clearly wasn't very slick.
Officers were called about 5 p.m. Monday to a burglary-in-progress in the 300 block of West Hickory Street. The resident who called 911 locked himself in a bedroom while waiting for police.
Before officers arrived, another resident flagged them down and reported a man was outside coating windows and doors with Vaseline.
When police made contact, the caller identified the man as the same person who had entered the apartment without permission. The 45-year-old suspect had reportedly claimed to be a relative of a roommate — a story that quickly fell apart when the roommate confirmed she didn’t know him at all.
The resident also told police the man was wearing his roommate’s slippers and hat and that a small amount of cash had gone missing from his room. Officers later found the missing cash on the suspect.
The petroleum jelly used in the unusual exterior “security upgrade” also belonged to the apartment residents, police said.
The man told officers he was simply there to visit someone.
He was arrested on suspicion of burglary.
