Denton residents will now have a right to air conditioning in all rental properties according to a new city ordinance.
Some residents say their landlords would not allow them to put window units in their properties and that some HOAs would simply not allow them to do that.
The ordinance narrowly passed and one of the councilmen who voted against it says this was a problem for one area of town and now the entire city will have to pay the price. Councilman Joe Holland says the man who brought this idea up hadn't had AC for the last 10 years.
The ordinance says repairs to air conditioners at rental units must also be done in a reasonable amount of time, and restricting window units could result in a $500 fine.
