Thanksgiving "Turkey Trots" took place Thursday morning in Dallas and Fort Worth. The races were able to continue despite the rain; they would only have been delayed by thunder and lightning.

"The weather, you know, comes and goes," one man said before the 10K in Fort Worth. "We've had some hot days, and we've had some really chilly ones. This one's kind of a messy one."

In Fort Worth, about 8,500 people had registered early. People were allowed to register on site, but organizers said the rain may keep numbers down from the anticipated 10,000.

"For the Y, this is really an event and fundraiser," says YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth Chief Executive Mike Brown. "All the proceeds, all the sponsorships, every registration goes to support all the Y programs, scholarships, programs for teens and youth."

Brown says the race will raise up to $300,000.

"Whether it's child care, day camp, youth sports, swim lessons, this really benefits all of our kids and families," he says.

Many people running say the Turkey Trots have become a family tradition spanning several generations. This was the 41st Turkey Trot in Fort Worth.

"We do come out here every year. My daughters, ever since they were little kids, now they're in their 30s," one man said before the race. "My daughter's have little kids now, so now my grandchildren will be part of the race. It's been kind of fun. I've got so many of these t-shirts."

"Thanksgiving is just one day but to be thankful is something we should be all the time," another runner said. "I think that adds a great deal of joy to our lives is to seek thankfulness in all things."
