Doctors studying how far COVID-19 has spread in north Texas are looking for more volunteers. The COVID-19 Prevalence Study is being conducted by researchers at UT Southwestern and Texas Health Resources. The researchers have recently opened participation in the study to anyone living in Dallas or Tarrant Counties.
Their goal is to find how widely COVID-19 has spread in north Texas and why some communities are being affected more than others.
"We know that we want these data yesterday. We need these data as we move forward, and we've already heard some of the scary data that's coming out in terms of the second surge happening across the state as well as in our DFW community," said Dr. Amit Singal at UTSW, the principal investigator for the study.
Participation the study was originally by invitation, but researchers have opened it to volunteers. Gathering data from more people, Dr. Singal said, "will allow us to improve the strategies for countering its spread as we continue to restore business and school operations."
Participants will be asked to answer a survey on-line or over the phone. Some will be selected for additional medical tests to determine if they have had COVID-19.
"We are definitely looking for more people," Dr. Singal said. "We need as many people across all the different racial, ethnic, socio-economic, geographic groups in Dallas and Tarrant County to participate in this study."
Volunteers can sign up by calling 833-947-2577 or by visiting UTSW's web site.
