One of the highest-ranking members of the Dallas Police Department is in the running to be the next Chief of Police in Austin.

Assistant Chief Avery Moore has been with DPD since 1990 and has held the rank of Assistant Chief since 2019.

Austin Police Chief Brian Manley announced he would retire in February. Austin City Manager Spencer Cronk named Assistant Chief Joseph Chacon to the position of Acting Chief while conducting a search for other possible candidates. Chacon is one of the three finalists for the position.

The third candidate is Los Angeles Deputy Chief Emada Tingirides. She has been with the LAPD since 1995.

All three candidates will meet with local elected officials and members of the Austin community on Wednesday, August 18th, and Thursday, August 19th. Austin City Manager Spencer Cronk hopes to make his selection for the new Chief of Police by the end of September.
