There was dramatic testimony in the IV bag tampering trial of former Richardson Doctor Raynaldo Ortiz, the jury heard from the husband of a woman who died after using a tainted IV bag.
Out of all the patients that the Government alleges Raynaldo Ortiz poisoned only one died. The jury has now heard from the widower of Doctor Melanie Kaspar.
Like Ortiz, she also worked at the Baylor Scott & White Surgical Center in North Dallas. She had taken several IV bags home and used one to self-rehydrate.
Her husband, John Kaspar, told the jury that minutes after his wife began, what should have been just a saline drip, she began screaming that her arm and chest were hurting.
Kaspar said he called 911 as his wife collapsed and he performed CPR. But minutes later a paramedic arrived and pronounced Kaspar dead.
Federal prosecutors say Ortiz had injected a nerve blocker into IV bags because he was angry over disciplinary actions taken against him. 11 others also had cardiac incidents for seemingly routine procedures.
The defense says there is no evidence that Ortiz tampered with any of the bags.
