Attorneys for the family of former U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson say they plan to sue a Dallas hospital that they blame for her death on New Year's Eve.

The family says an infection, caused by medical negligence, led to a "terrible, painful death." They also claim she was left unattended, sitting in her own waste while she asked for help.

A news conference is set for 2 p.m. at a Dallas lawyer's office. Johnson's son is expected to speak.

Johnson, a former state legislator and Congresswoman, died Sunday at her home.

"Congresswoman Johnson was a longtime friend and champion in the communities we serve—she is an inspiration to all. We are committed to working directly with the Congresswoman’s family members and their counsel. Out of respect for patient privacy, we must limit our comments," Baylor Scott & White said in a written statement.
