Election Day Tuesday could be what lawmakers in Washington finally need to work out a deal to reopen the government.
Political Science Professor Dr. Cal Jillson from Southern Methodist University says democrats are favored to win in two Governor's races in Virginia and New Jersey.
That could be seen as an indicator of what to expect a year from now.
"If that doesn't happen, that will be the story," Dr. Jillson said. "For example if Jack Ciattarelli, the republican in New Jersey, should pull out a win, that would be a big story and a hard day for the democrats."
Meanwhile, a bipartisan group of lawmakers are meeting quietly in Washington to possibly reach a deal to reopen the government. This election could be a reset for lawmakers.
"Both sides have a reason to try to find an off-ramp and get out of this stalemate," Dr. Jillson said. "They're both dug in at this point."
