Medical Examiner: Teens in Weatherford deaths killed by fentanyl

A synthetic drug has now been linked to the deaths of two teenagers in Weatherford in November.

Toxicology test results at the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office show both Ethan Hathaway, 19 Weatherford, and Alyssa Baltzell, 19, Springtown were killed by the synthetic opioid fentanyl, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's website.

Hathaway was found dead in his home November 18th.  Less than two weeks later Baltzell was found dead in her car, parked at the Weatherford WalMart after police say she was reported unresponsive.

A member of Hathaway's family said he was convinced the teenager did not know the drug he was taking was laced with fentanyl, a drug which has lethal effects when administered in marginal doses.

"Just a small amount, like a pin drop amount, can kill a person" said Debra Adams, Clinical Director of the Turtle Creek Recovery Center, which treats people suffering from drug addition.  "The person who is using any other illicit opioids doesn't know fentanyl is mixed in what they are taking."

Weatherford police say they have been waiting for the lab results before deciding their next step on the ongoing investigation.
