Expanded medical marijuana bill close to becoming law in Texas

Austin (1080 KRLD) - A Watered-down version of the state's medical marijuana program appears to be close to becoming law.

House Bill 1535 expands the eligibility of medical marijuana to people with cancer and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Texas Tribune reports that the Senate dropped a provision that would've allowed access to medical marijuana to any Texan with chronic pain. The bill also limits the amount of THC, the substance that gets you high, to just 1%.that's considered a nominal increase from .05

Advocates had wanted the rules and red tape reduced saying it restricts the people it's meant to help. Fort Worth Rep. Stephanie Klick asked the house to pass the bill rather than let it die in committee.

As it stands, fewer than 6,000 Texans have enrolled in the Compassionate Use Program. About 2 million people are eligible under current law.
