A Farmers Branch Police officer was hit by shrapnel after a shooting involving the department overnight.

The department says Farmers Branch officers were working with Addison officers to find a suspect who may have been involved in drug activity along Belt Line, two blocks east of Marsh, about 1:30 a.m.

Police say officers saw a car that might have been involved in the parking lot. They say officers told the person inside to get out, a "confrontation ensued and shots were exchanged between the suspect and officers." Farmers Branch Police say the preliminary investigation shows the suspect shot at officers, and officers from both departments returned fire.

A Farmers Branch Police officer was hit by shrapnel. The department says he went to the hospital with minor injuries, was treated and released.

The suspect was stable when he was taken to the hospital.

Tuesday morning, the Texas Municipal Police Association said one of its lawyers was working with the officers involved.

"Violence against law enforcement continues to escalate. This is unacceptable and enough is enough," the group wrote in a Facebook post.

Farmers Branch Police say their internal affairs unit, Dallas County District Attorney and Texas Rangers are investigating both the original case and the officer-involved shooting.
