Father beats son for Texas high school football's biggest prize

ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD) - One of the state football championship games in Texas this weekend was a true family affair.

The 6A-Division 1 state championship featured Todd Dodge's Austin Westlake squad against Southlake Carroll, coached by his son, Riley.

Elizabeth Dodge, Todd's wife and Riley's mother, says it was a proud moment for her.

"It's just overwhelming," says Mrs. Dodge. "You could never write this story, and I just feel so blessed."

And she said it was both exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time.

"I am wanting both teams to do well," says Mrs. Dodge, "and I don't know how that happens if one's going to win (and) one's going to lose, so we'll see."

In the end, it was Westlake beating Carroll, 52-34.

After the game, Todd said he talked to Riley throughout the week.

"We both took a lot of pride to be representing the State of Texas ... in doing something that had never been done before," said the elder Dodge.

And Riley noted the unusual circumstances surrounding the matchup.

"It was very strange -- something that we didn't see coming," said the younger Dodge. "I'm glad it came."

Todd Dodge says now that football season is over, the whole family can now finally get together.

"One of the crazy things that Riley and I talked about this week was that the guy that we're coaching against tonight, we're going to be together this coming Thursday for Christmas," says Todd. "We're finally going to celebrate Christmas together as a family."

Years ago, father and son were on the same team.

In 2006, the Dodges led Southlake Carroll to the 5A-Division 1 state title (the largest classification at the time), with Todd as head coach and Riley as his quarterback.

Other teams winning state championships this weekend were Aledo, Denton Ryan, and Katy.
