The FBI is warning of a growing problem that targets certain communities.

Transnational Repression is when a country targets people who left for the United States by intimidating and harassing them.

"Communities are sometimes pressured to monitor themselves and others because they may have family members back in their country of origin who are being repressed or pressured," said Monica Morales who runs the FBI's Analysis Program.

This can also target political and human rights activists as well as journalists.

The FBI considers this a lesser-known crime impacting communities in North Texas.

Roman Razhavsky with the FBI's Counterintelligence tells the 'Inside the FBI' podcast that they are there to stop foreign governments from doing things on U.S. soil that harms citizens or national security.

"Many TNR cases are perpetrated by the intelligence services or other officials of foreign governments," Razhavsky said.

Anyone who suspects they have been subjected to or victimized by this should contact the FBI.
