A DART train caught fire Wednesday afternoon just after exiting the downtown tunnel near Pearl/Arts District Station, sending smoke and sparks into the tunnel system and forcing the evacuation of about 40 people.

Six riders were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and nine more were treated at the scene before emergency crews doused the flames and shut off power in the affected section of the Red, Blue and Yellow lines.

As a result, DART rail service is running on a modified schedule this morning while crews remove the damaged train, restore the power system, and assess infrastructure along the corridor.

DART officials advise commuters to expect delays and plan ahead.

To help commuters navigate the disruption, shuttle buses are operating at key stations including Victory, EBJ/Union, West End, Akard, St. Paul, Pearl/Arts District, Deep Ellum, Cityplace/Uptown, and SMU/Mockingbird.

DART is using nearby routes to create temporary bus bridges to connect riders to destinations like Union Station, Mockingbird, and Deep Ellum.

Officials apologize for the inconvenience and say they’re working through the night and into this morning to get the system back online - safety is the top priority, and they’ll provide updates through the DART website and service-alert channels as work continues.
