Firefighters from the Unified Fire Authority and Millcreek Fire Department in Utah helped save an estimated 25 million honeybees Tuesday after a semi-truck hauling hundreds of hives broke down in Parleys Canyon amid unseasonably high temperatures.

The truck, carrying approximately 480 hives, became disabled on the roadway in the canyon east of Salt Lake City. With the vehicle stopped and temperatures climbing, the bees faced the risk of overheating without the airflow normally provided by highway travel. Crews responded to the scene and used hoses to gently mist the trailer, keeping the insects cool and calm while mechanics worked to repair the truck.

Each hive contained roughly 40,000 to 60,000 honey bees, according to the Unified Fire Authority. Officials said the coordinated effort prevented significant losses to the colony. No firefighters were stung during the operation.

The Unified Fire Authority later shared details of the response on its Instagram account, noting the unusual nature of the call. “While mechanics worked on the truck, firefighters carefully used a hose to mist the trailer and keep the bees cool, calm, and safe in the heat,” the post stated.

Honey bees play a critical role in pollination for agriculture and ecosystems across Utah and beyond. The successful intervention avoided what could have been a substantial loss for the beekeeper transporting the hives.

The incident occurred on a stretch of I-80 through Parleys Canyon, a busy corridor connecting Salt Lake City to Park City and beyond. No injuries or other incidents were reported in connection with the breakdown or rescue effort.
