Hospitals in Texas now have the most COVID-19 patients since late January. Tuesday, the Department of State Health Services said hospitals had 12,227 COVID-19 patients, the highest number since January 27.
Of the state's 22 "trauma service regions," five reported zero available ICU beds Tuesday: Abilene, Bryan, Corpus Christi, Laredo and Waco. Eight others had fewer than ten ICU beds: Austin, Beaumont, Killeen, Lubbock, Lufkin, Northeast Texas, Victoria and Wichita Falls.
According to the Texas Medical Association's COVID-19 task force, between 93 and 98% of hospitalizations in each region are people who are not vaccinated.
In North Texas, the Department of State Health Services says hospitals have 2,853 COVID-19 patients, up from 1,783 two weeks ago. COVID-19 patients now use 18.3% of capacity in North Texas, and the area has 78 open ICU beds.

"Our numbers are escalating and the amount of space available at hospitals is extremely
tight. We can’t all do everything, but we can all do something. It’s team human versus the virus and we all need to be on team human," Jenkins wrote in a statement.

"If you’ve already been vaccinated, wear your mask indoors and encourage your unvaccinated friends to get vaccinated. Please approach them in a spirit of respect and equality when hearing their concerns and telling them your story as to why you chose to get vaccinated. If you’re unvaccinated please consider the danger of the new Delta variant, not only to you but to those you care about and our economy," Jenkins says. "Get answers to your questions and talk to your loved ones who have already been vaccinated."
