The former Argyle Volunteer Fire District Chief Troy Mac Hohenberger pleaded guilty in federal court to 13 federal charges.
Prosecurots say the federal charges against Hohenberger stem from stealing nearly a half-million dollars from the department and not paying employee retirement benefits.
The Justice Department says Hohenberger took out cash advances at casinos and used department money to repay them. Sam Johnson, the president of Argyle Professional Firefighters Local 5190, says Hohenberger will need to make restitution.
Hohenberger tried covering up the embezzlement by falsifying the department's budget report. That's led to a deficit of more than $1.5 million. Johnson says as a result, unless the state or the county steps in with assistance by August, firefighters will have to go without paychecks.
