KAUFMAN (1080 KRLD)- A man who served as the treasurer for a north Texas volunteer fire department is facing federal bank fraud charges. 68-year-old Denny C. Mackey was the treasurer for the Crandall Volunteer Fire Department in Kaufman County.
Prosecutors say Mackey used his position to apply for a $75,000 loan in the name of the department, telling bank officials the department needed the funds for its payroll. The organization did not actually have any full-time staff members. He's accused of withdrawing some of the funds for his own use and funneling more of the money to a company that he controlled.
The department eventually sold some of its firefighting equipment to re-pay the loan. Mackey is charged with making a false statement to a bank. The maximum penalty is 30 years in federal prison if he's convicted.
