It may be just the beginning of the school year for most students but Thursday was cap-and-gown day for 20 young men and women who very recently lived in the Dallas County Jail.

These 20 have completed a reentry program that included training in the construction trades intended to give them skills to make a legal living.

Dallas County Sheriff Marian Brown told the graduates they needed to leave behind the people, places and habits they have known before because they need to cultivate better influences moving forward.

With their new skills, these graduates have jobs waiting, organized by The Regional Black Contractors Association which helped provide the training.
