Former President George W. Bush took to his Instagram account to honor and remember the victims of September 11th, 2001.
It was 24 years ago Thursday that he went against the wishes of his Secret Service protection to speak to the American people from the Oval Office on the evening of the attack.
The 43rd president released two photos of crosses made from steel from the World Trade Center presented to him by the New York Fire Department and Port Authority.
“In memory of the lives stolen by terrorists and the heroes who sacrificed themselves to save others 24 years ago,” former President Bush wrote. “May God bless our great country.”
Steel from the Twin Towers is on display in Dallas at the George W. Bush Presidential Center on the campus of Southern Methodist University.
