Former State Representative Ron Wilson has entered a plea of "guilty" to charges of willfully evading payment of income taxes he owed to the Internal Revenue Service. Federal prosecutors say he dodged paying $794,632 of taxes between 2011 and 2019.
Prosecutors say during those years, Wilson took steps to improperly conceal his income and assets from the IRS. They say he used a trust account that his law firm set up to hold clients' funds, and instead deposited his own monthly salary into that account. Prosecutors also say he switched his state pension payments from direct deposit to physical checks so he could deposit them into a trust, then converted those funds to his own personal use.
Wilson could face up to five years in prison when he is sentenced, along with requirements for restitution and financial penalties.
Wilson served in the Texas Legislature as a State Representative from 1977 to 2004. He was a Democrat and his district covered parts of the Houston area.
