The Defense Department is going to re-name Fort Hood in honor of Texas' first Hispanic four-star general.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced the change last week and agreed to a recommendation that the base be called Fort Cavazos in memory of General Richard Cavazos

In 1976, Cavazos became the first Mexican-American to reach the rank of brigadier general in the United States Army. He got his fourth star in 1982. He died in 2017 and is buried  at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Activists have long lobbied to remove the name of John Bell Hood who was a Confederate army general.
