Despite lots of opposition, a plan to build a shelter for human trafficking victims was approved by the Fort Worth City Council.
Mercy Culture Church in northeast Fort Worth has plans to build a Justice Residence, a 100-bed shelter on church property several years ago.
The council heard not only from victims of human trafficking, but from church officials who have dealt with the Oakhurst neighborhood who oppose the property.
Residents who live next door say the shelter would worsen traffic congestion in the neighborhood and make it a target for criminals.
Those in favor of the shelter say not only is it needed, but meets the standards set by the city. The shelter was approved with a 6-4 vote.
