Fort Worth fire commanders say man rescued from drain culvert was not a firefighter

Fort Worth fire commanders are clarifying the situation where a man was rescued from a drain culvert over the weekend.

Social media reports have suggested the victim was a firefighter because photos showed him wearing a firefighter's helmet as he was brought up out of a hole 15 to 20 feet down.

But commanders are stressing the man was a civilian who was given a firefighter's helmet to prevent further injuries as he was hoisted out of the hole.

Sunday night, the man stepped on a sheet of plywood covering the culvert on Tolleson Drive in west Fort Worth. When the plywood gave way, the man fell in.

After he was rescued, he was rushed to the hospital and was said to be in stable condition.
