Long called an eye-sore in Fort Worth's Lake Como neighborhood, an abandoned car wash is now being torn down with joyful residents taking their turns with sledgehammers to get the process started.
Even in the fierce winds, scores of Lake Como residents joined in the party atmosphere to witness and participate in the destruction of the brick structure at the corner of Diaz Avenue and Horne Street.
For years, the location has been a symbol of crime and blight in the southwest Fort Worth neighborhood.
Organizers supplied hard hats and sledgehammers and a DJ to set the mood with upbeat music. Long-time residents recalled times when the car wash was an important part of the community, but it has been deteriorating for more than 30 years.
Reports say it's been the scene of drugs, prostitution and crime including the Independence Day shooting that left eight people wounded.
Among those taking a turn with the sledgehammers was Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes who called it a "good day in Lake Como."
