The City of Fort Worth is giving more details about a major change to its ambulance service.

The city is transitioning from over four decades of service from MedStar to EMS being provided by the city's fire department.

Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker says they hope this move creates improvements to several key areas.

"Improving quality of service and efficiency on the operations side, improving response times by up to 5.5 minutes, improving our 911 system," Parker said.

Parker says they have welcomed more than 600 MedStar employees into the Fort Worth Fire Department which is 98% of MedStar's workforce.

Assistant City Manager William Johnson says the transition comes after the bold decision made months ago to bring MedStar into the city operation.

"I'm really proud of the work that our city team has done in collaboration with MedStar, with the 440, with our partner cities and others to make all this happen," Johnson said.

The official transition date is July 1st.
