A Fort Worth man is going to prison for decades for the 2018 murder of his girlfriend Katie McHowell, a young mother of two from Cleburne.
Court records show Daricko Brewer pleaded guilty and was sentenced Thursday to 35 years in prison.
Fort Worth police first thought it was an accident. They found McHowell's body in the driver's seat of a Chevy Impala that had crashed and flipped into a drainage ditch along Brentwood Stair Road. But it quickly became clear she did not die from the crash, she had been shot in the head.
Forensic tests showed that Brewer had been in the car with her. He first tried to get away by going to California. But Fort Worth police got their warrants and had him brought back to Tarrant County to face trial.
