The council votes Tuesday on whether to hire a law firm and move forward with lawsuits against several streaming services including Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+. The lawsuit is reportedly over non-payment of franchise fees, similar to those paid by cable and satellite television companies.

While the streaming services are not considered public utilities, city officals say they rely on infrastructure services that use the public right of way.

Fourteen other cities including Dallas and eight others in North Texas are pursuing similar lawsuits.

If successful, Fort Worth officials said they could collect hundreds of thousands of dollars in yearly fees.
