Fort Worth says it is working with nonprofits to help people stay safe during winter weather this week.

The National Weather Service says some areas north of I-20 could receive up to six inches of snow.

“Our priority is to ensure that every Fort Worth resident has access to the resources they need to stay safe during extreme winter weather. Through strong partnerships and proactive planning, we’re providing essential shelter options and encouraging the public to take necessary precautions,"  Fort Worth Director of Emergency Communications and Management Sonny Saxton wrote in a statement.

For homeless, Fort Worth says individuals can go to Presbyterian Night Shelter at 2400 Cypress St. or Union Gospel Mission at 1321 E. Lancaster Ave. Families can go to the Salvation Army campus at 1855 E. Lancaster Ave.

The city says it will be able to offer additional beds and transportation if any locations reach capacity.

During the day, people can visit community centers if they need a place to stay warm.

Fort Worth says crews started pretreating roads with brine Monday. When snow arrives, the city says spotters will drive around to watch conditions, and 30 trucks will be available for sanding. The city says trucks will first focus on bridges and hospital entrances then hills, intersections, main roads and emergency overflow shelters. The city says neighborhood streets will not be sanded.

The city urges residents and businesses to plan now to protect pipes by making sure they are insulated, disconnecting hoses and covering outdoor spigots. Homeowners can also make sure they can find their main water shut-off valve and keep cabinet doors open under sinks.
