The Fort Worth Zoning Commission has approved a new rule aimed at slowing the development of apartments in the Historic Stockyards district.

Specifically, the rule says a zoning change would be required to build multi-family housing east of Packers Street and Niles City Boulevard which are on the far east side of the Stockyards.

There's already a large apartment complex plus a 50,000 square foot office building planned on the footprint of the old Swift Armour Meat Packing plant.

The Fort Worth Stockyards Business Association says business owners are already concerned about crowding from tourism traffic, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, and that adding a thousand of residents in the district would only add to the problem.

The Zoning Commission approved the new rule on a 5-3 margin, but it still has to be approved by the Fort Worth City Council.
