A Garland doctor was sentenced this week to seven years in prison after he was convicted in February of running an illegal "pill mill."
Dr. Leovares Mendez and another doctor operated a medical clinic in Garland. Mendez was indicted in 2020 on charges of unlawful distribution of controlled substances.
Prosecutors said Mendez was handing out hydrocodone and other controlled substances to people without any legitimate medical purpose -- and without conducting exams.
They also said he was working with another doctor and someone who recruited people to the clinic. Both of those individuals pleaded "guilty" instead of going to trial.
