Garland elects new mayor in runoff

Voters in Garland chose a new mayor Saturday. Cities across the Metroplex held run-off elections for races not decided May 3.

Turnout in Dallas County, where Garland is located, was 7.85% with 33,533 of 427,356 registered voters casting a ballot. A total of 7,749 voted for mayor of Garland.

Dylan Hedrick won the race, beating Deborah Morris 51.7% to 48.3%.

"I am deeply honored and humbled by the trust the people of Garland have placed in me. This victory belongs not just to me, but to every resident who believed in our vision for a safer, stronger, and more prosperous city," Hedrick posted on Facebook Saturday night.

He posted he plans to focus on rebuilding streets, improving public safety, supporting economic growth and "making city government more responsive and available to the citizens of Garland."

Hedrick is a civil engineer and had previously served on the Garland City Council.
